“Kim Woo-Jin is a stage drama writer while Korea is under Japanese occupation. He is already married, but he falls in love with Yun Sim-Deok. Yun Sim-Deok is the first Korean soprano. She records the song “Praise of Death” which becomes the first Korean pop song in 1926. Kim Woo-Jin and Yun Sim-Deok’s fate ends tragically. This drama is based on the true story of Kim Woo Jin and Yun Shim Deok.”
The story of this drama might not appeal to some of you because of the sensitivity of the theme, and yet the lessons are more relatable and understandable. It touches and reminds us of the reality where some people choose and live their lives to their own accord. We might not understand their reasons, but we don’t have to judge.
Hymn of death’s characterization was at best. The presentation was not overplayed nor the opposite. Their expressions showed the weight of each emotion; no need to shed tears and cried out loud, here and there, you would truly feel what was bottled inside.
Lee Jong Suk and Shin Hye Sun brought to life the story of sacrifice one’s own happiness in a very excellent portrayal.
